As for Howard Carter we all know what happened to him! Is he the first recorded death from 'Flapjack Poisoning'?>

Howard Carter was part of the team that found Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 aged 48,he died aged 65 in 1939 ,took awhile for the 'flapjack'poisoning to work I think :D:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Well, it seems that the warning on the OP's tin was because of the risk of it exploding. The cynic in me cried 'so they can sell you some more, of course!'...
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Rather a long time since this topic first surfaced but....I just opened an out of date tin of black treacle and as I started to loosen the lid it exploded with an almighty bang! Luckily the lid didn't hit me in the face but it went a fair distance! The contents still tasted and looked ok so the Easter cake is in the oven....although it has overflowed the baking tin!

I noticed the treacle tin does have a warning that pressure can build up in out of date tins.....made for a memorable baking session!

The same thing happened to me with an old black treacle tin some years ago. Nowadays I simply do not put the lid on (very) firmly . . . . Now champagne, - a different matter! After the occasion of our marriage, opening said such bottle caused the stopper to fly skywards so strongly that it actually broke the fluorescent lamp cover on the ceiling. The bottle did not even have a warning like 'causes drowsiness' or anything. :-)
  • apparently pressure can build up in the unopened tins which can blow the lids off or cause them to explode - I have just been reading about a nasty injury sustained by someone who was trying to open one of these cans which blew off the lid and hit her in the face causing concussion, cuts and whiplash.

I realise this is quite an ancient thread (though not going quite back to the pyramids). I was wondering the same question, having found a couple of tins of black treacle dating back to 2000. However I'm wondering if the level of hmf[1] can build up with storage, as it does in honey? [1] hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde
  • Just found a half used tin of black treacle in back of cupboard, was looking for golden syrup must have used it. Date on tin bbe/use by Nov 2006. Tin a bit rusty, contents inside not furry or fizzing, smells funny but I can't remember what treacle supposed to smell like. Making banana flapjacks with at moment, hopefully they won't kill me or the neighbours. I didn't know the tins could explode until I read this, maybe it should say on tin? Got another full tin of it at back of cupboard, suspect same bbe date, hope it doesn't explode on me. Will update on how flapjacks turn out. I regularly find out of date jars, that wiggle their way to back of cupboard, only ones I don't eat are ones that contain dairy products like cream or cheese if several years out of date, or if they don't look or smell quite right. Recently I ate fruited Wensleydale cheeses, and smoked cheese, that was over one month out of date - wasn't mouldy and smelt ok. I'm allergic to mould, so I have to be careful - touch wood, emptying the cupboards hasn't killed me yet. My aim is to empty a cupboard of old things, then clean it and replenish it with items in date order, then only buy when down to last one.

This post is ancient but just want to add somthing.
Baking supplies are scarce at the moment, and I 've been struggling to get the ingredients for a rich fruit cake.
My neighbour kindly offered me an unopened tin of black treacle which she put on my doorstep with a note to say it had expired... the BBE is May 2016!
She had opened it to check if it looked ok before she gave it to me,, and   it obviously didn't explode  She suggests that I sample it   (yeuckk, it's vile at the best of times).
These posts reassure me that it should be fine, would anyone advise against using it though?

Use it!  What could go wrong. Sugar/molasses is a natural preservative.
