I wanna dye my hair...

Do you have yours done at the hairdressers, or buy one yourself? I've never done it before!! Only ever had highlights that I used to do myself 15 or so years ago. But its boring mousy brown, and dead straight, and I have noticed a couple of grey hairs creeping in!
Just don't want to spend loads of money in salon if you can get just a good as job done at home.
What home-colourants do you use? There are so many - I felt really out of my depth in the supermarket this morning!
I am looking for a nice brown. I am natually mid-brown, but like I say - it's boring!
Thanks for any help and advice. x

If you don't have much grey to cover then any of the semi-permanents in the supermarket would be fine. I wouldn't go for permanent until the grey is difficult to cover and I did use boxes of permanent for a while but now go to a hairdresser and she gives me loads of high and lolights which tend to look more natural than one solid colour. But I am getting a lot of grey now so off the shelf just doesn't work for me now. Just don't lighten your hair too much - I once made the mistake of using on of the lightening packs so I could turn my dark hair blond - a lot of orange hair!! Had to fork out a fortune for hairdresser to fix it. So if you are mousey then a couple of shades lighter would be as much as I would go, or go for a warmer or darker shade. To be honest I think that was the last time I did it myself, it is a bad memory. But it was my own stupid fault.0

I dye my own hair with l'oreal products and never had a problem.
I also dyed my daughters with the temporary dyes, the only thing to make sure is that you comb it through to get even coverage.
I also do my husbands grey hair with Just for Men from the supermarket and it is fine except for once when i did it black instead of dark brown and someone at work said he looked like he had a cat sat on his head. LOL0 -
last week i felt the same i bought boots multitonal highlighting kit. I went for rum truffle which is a brown with a bit of red. you put on the colour first all over. I found it to be a good consistancy and it did not drip or stain my skin. once its done you rinse and towel dry then mix up a little highlighting bleach and use a little round brush to pull out the odd highlight. It worked out about 2 shades lighter than the first colour and my hair looks really nice.
