How does the free sim card thing work?

  • Be careful though. I remember someone saying quite some time back, when i had a 3 mobile phone, that if you unlock the phone to all networks you can loose the warranty on a contract phone, in otherwise they may not replace it for another phone if your current phone becomes damaged. Unless of course its stolen, or whatever, in which case it wouldn't matter.

I'll also mention that you don't have to use the sim card just because you got them, save it for when you need it or sell it/them. I just save them and have done for years, I gather a large amount and then just sell them, they've helped me out considerably when it comes to the end of a month when i have no money.

  • From what I have read unlocking does not invalidate the warranty at all, unless the unlocking process goes wrong and trashes the firmware. I have read of quite a few people sending unlocked phones off for unrelated repairs and the network not querying it.
  • Maybe it was just 3 mobile then. But then again, to be honest i wouldn't believe anything from them. They made me pay a £400 phone bill that wasn't even run up by me, they are just an awful network.

I duno, it'll be in the terms and conditions.

  • A Little Info....

Sony Ericsson phones can only be unlocked via a cable.
Nokia unlock codes are freely available (here and at probably every other forum in the entire world).
Samsung phones are notorious for having Temp Unlock codes, but as long as you keep the code you can just keep using it each time you change the sim.

Unlocking a phone to another network on 3 does invalidate warranty. I beleive its in their terms and conditions but things may have changed a little since I was considering them.

If your already on Pay Monthly its probably pointless switching to Pay As You Go, as Pay Monthly is better value for money. If the PAYG deal seems better phone up your phone company and tell them that you want them to beat that deal or your leaving.

Thanks everyone for your help - have requested the two free Virgin ones so will see how I get on.

I have a Nokia so it sounds as if I'll be able to unlock it quite easily when the time come.
