What can I do about a bad sickness record?

This is such an important topic. My son has been off sick for 2 months, due entirely to bad management, chronic staff shortages and behavioiur that borders on bullying. It is his first job (with a high street bank that shall remain nameless) and it takes huge courage to take grievance action - even worse when you have been made ill by the situation. I have watched him turn from a healthy, happy young man to an ill, pale and miserable human being who suffers from persistent colds and anxiety attacks. There is a huge difference between employees shirking duties and calling in sick (infuriating - have had own business and know how hard this is in private sector) and people who are made ill BY THEIR JOB AND THOSE WHO MANAGE THEM. When the fault is entirely with the dreadful management, they deserve everything they get. If you treat your staff well and are fair to them, they do not go off sick with work-related stress!!!!
He has now been offered a job somewhere else. Having been turned down by one company already - because he was honest about his sickness record - he has lied on this application. We now wait to see what transpires from his reference. I guess it will come up, but it had to be worth a try - none of this was his fault in the first place. When he has eventually left the bank in question, I fully intend to write a piece in our local paper and will be changing all my accounts - personal and business. Such behaviour is absolutely disgusting and it has made me very angry.
Has anyone else successfully got around this problem?! Real sympathies go out to the person who started this topic. Hope it works out for you.:(0
