Do I need to pay voluntary N.I contributions?

Hi there, grateful for any help that anyone can give me...
I am an IT contractor who works under an Umbrella Company, so I pay NI when I'm working, but in between contracts I don't claim JSA. How do I know if I need to pay voluntary NI contributions while I'm between contracts, or whether my contributions during my contracts are enough to buy me that year?

If you work through an umbrella company aren't you still an employee of that company during the periods between contracts? Or do you get a P45 every time a contract ends.
If you become unemployed I would have thought you would need to sign on so as to get national insurance credits. If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0
