Green Whites - help please!

I use biodegradable washing products but have found that over time my white towels are starting to look a little grey and shirts are not brilliantly clean around the collars etc. Can anyone suggest a green way or product to brighten my whites? I'm really trying to avoid using nasty chemicals or increase the temperature on my washing machine.......

We tend to judge the cleanliness of whites by optical brightness rather than how clean they are. Ecological detergents don't have optical brighteners in them, so they don't tend to get your whites so white...
However, there are a number of things you can try...
a. a spoonful of soda crystals in with your detergent (not with soapnuts)
b. ecover laundry bleach
c. hanging whites in the sun (in summer) as the sun is a powerful bleaching agent
d. soaking in a solution of lemon juice
e. avoiding white linen & clothing

A teaspoon of bicarb in with your powder and a splash of vinegar as softener also works very well in a white wash.0
