have i got a job or not

I posted here a few weeks ago saying i had interview for a job

since then i have had the interview and i sort of have a job

i got the job but then the lady said there was no work in my area at the moment as they were starting up .

its for home care work, she said i would have to do 15 hours shadowing (going around with someone else who shows me what to do)

however this shadowing is miles away from my area plus this '15 hours shadowing' is unpaid.

Do I have a job or not ?, do i notify the job center ?

im a bit peeved to say the least.

It sounds well dodgy to me and I would assume that no, you don't have a job.

It seems to me that they want to you do 15 hours unpaid 'training' and then want you to be available should they get some work in your area - which could be tomorrow or could be never!
    :p

Until you have an unconditional job offer in your hand assume you don't have a position.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • No. Job training, even shadowing should be paid.
Still you might want to do it for your experience and CV if you can. However until you have a start date or contract I still think you should still consider yourself unemployed. Sorry.
The offer might be genuine though and they may have work in the future, if this is the case they can contact you then.

Don't tell the jobcentre you have a job until the day you start one.
I've heard of people turning up for work on what was to be their first day only to find the business had had to close because of the economic climate and they had no job.
  • Tell her there is no point doing the shadowing because you could learn one way and by the time there is work everything could have changed. If you are doing home care work you should also have certificates in manual handling, food hygiene, personal care and a CRB check at the very least.

How would you get these certificates before getting a home care job?
In my local area once you have the job they put you through training but there are so many people applying for any jobs who already have training and experience that they are taken on first.

You would get the certificates as part of your training, not beforehand, but the OP didn't mention them so I wanted to make sure they were aware.

All good agencies will help you with training.
