I wonder if one of you lovely moneys savers could help me. If i'm using custard powder to make custard with milk can I use sweetner instead of sugar????

Thanks in advance

I can't see why not. I make custard from powder without adding any sugar and it turns out fine consistancy wise. I would think sweetener will be alright.

I use Splenda for custard and it turns out ok, have also used it in rice pudding. Just stir it well to make sure it dissolves.
  • Thanks guys.

I tried it with it, but when mixed with the powder and a drop of milk it went into this weird consistancy. Could only say it was like soft plastic. So I chucked it away because I didn't want to risk ruining the pint of milk I had left and did it with custard. It may have been the sweetner I had, or maybe I should have added it when it was warm in the pot???

We always use the sweetener that LIDL sell.

    No problems so far.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I always think sweetners are best added, to taste, at the very end of the cooking process in dishes like custard and rice pudding etc. It might be my imagination but I think there's less of an artificial chemical taste when they haven't been subjected to prolonged cooking.

My OH is diabetic so can't have sugary custard. I always make it using the Birds powder in the tub, I make it in the pan as usual but without the sugar/sweetener (so just powder & skimmed milk), when the custard is ready I put some into a jug for OH and add about half a tablespoon of sweetener & give it a good stir. I then add about half a tablespoon of sugar to the rest of the custard in the pan for me & DD.

I do the same with rice pudding, just make it without any sugar or sweetener then just add it to the individual portions once it's served up.
