Westcot out of the blue!

I've just got a letter from Wescot Credit Service stating that I now owe them £217.48 and that I should pay by a certain date. This refers to a debt outstanding with British Gas.
Firstly, this surprises me as I have no threatening letters from British Gas about the debt and I have made payments to them to clear this. The last letter I received from BG stated that were searching for my last payment (which I sent them). There was nothing about "pay now or we'll pass this over".
But now Wescot have just sent a threatening letter.
Should I contact BG first and ask them whats going on, or should I deal with Wescot?
Can I ask Wescot for details of the 'deed of assigment' and any statement of accounts?

In the first instance, I'd get in touch with BG and see what's going on.
Don't speak to Wescott on the phone, they will threaten and get nasty. Write to them only.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

OK, I've got a letter prepared for British Gas.
In fact the last letter I received from them stated that my account had been passed to the Central Recoveries Office and that they would contact me to make arrangements for payment.
I have not heard anything from them and now it seems they have simply passed this over to Wescot. I know its not really an excuse that they never contacted me, but you would think they would at least let me know that this was being passed over?0 -
I always thought they should let you know that it's being sold on but that's not always the case; often the first you hear is from the DCA. I had a DCA write to me recently saying they had bought my Abbey debt and had enclosed the Abbey letter with their letter to me! So that was the first I knew about it!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Hi,
I have received numerous letters and phone calls from a company called Westcot Credit Services Ltd claiming that i owe outstanding money from an Orange Mobile phone account, it has 2 reference numbers and 2 different debt amounts. The phone calls & letters have started to become more threatning, i have explained to them that i have no recollection of taking out a mobile phone contract with Orange they are dating it back to 2004 from an address i used to stay at with my partner. I have asked them to provide me with a copy of the signed credit agreement that they refer to, they told me that it was my place to contact orange, i have done this on several occasions and they hold no record of debt/contract in my name or that corresponds with any of my personal details, which i have told Westcot over and over, they are now saying they will enter my home and remove goods to the amount of the debt, i am now very scared as i have a 2year old in the house. I am also incurring legal charges.
Please please help me someone

The first thing I'd do is get legal advise, try CAB. They're good with debt you owe, so I'm sure they're at least as good with debt you don't know;)The 1st things that come to mind to me are 1) Threaten legal action, 2) Don't open your door to anyone if you don't know who it is, 3) Don't let the debt collectors in, 4) If they're at the door call the police. Consider taking legal action or even threaten to or do go to the papers. I'd ask a legal expert/CAB how to go about it.Boris Johnson voted against Brexit in the Commons, all to become leader of the Conservative Party. Fall for it and you deserve everything you get.0
