overpayed by previous employer

After leaving a job in at the end of 2006, my employer (previous employer continued to pay me for a number of months. I foolishly kept the money and did not make any effort to investigate. I then moved address and soon after the payments stopped. I have heared nothing until today, when an investigating company managed to contact me, In panic i hung up the phone. I intend to seek legal advice, but wondered if any one else was able to offer any advice, such as, is there a time limit on how soon they can demand the money back from me or if after so long they lose the right to claim. PLEASE HELP!!!

If you were overpaid and you spent the money - then you basically stole it. You will need to pay it back as the old employer is entitled to ask for it. I think that the statute is 6 years but this may be different for overpayment by an employer.

The onus is on you I am afraid because you stole the money.

I don't know about a time limit but you'll be lucky if they don't charge interest on it. Why didn't you pay it back straight away, you knew it wasn't yours?
