Never ending spiral of debt

I am at my wits end yet again.
I was on top of all my debt issues which spiralled out of control many years ago after a nasty relationship breakdown, paying extortionate rent for houses and living off credit cards.
I had a good job had worked out a payment plan for all my debts and some are down to just a few hundred pounds. Great. Then after my partner was made redundant he go a new job in another part of the country and I havent worked for 5 months now. I had managed to keep my payments up then asked to reduce them to help me out and now I've missed a payment in December and paid a little to each in January but the bullying calls and texts andf letters have all started again. I finally admitted defeat on the job search front in January and signed on for Jobseekers Allowance even though its against my principles after working all my life and my partner doesnt earn a lot so we are struggling like everyone else is.
Is there any way they can be forced to accept a stupid low payment or is hassling me for more perfectly legal?

    Hi Gamebird,

Sounds like you are going through a rough time. I'm sure lots of people will be posting soon to offer advice.

Have you contacted Payplan or CCCS? I'm on debt management plan with Payplan and am paying low offer of payments through them to numerous creditors who have accepted the payments and stopped all interest and charges.

Hope you manage to sort things, you'll get lots of support here. xx

HAve you checked if you can reclaim tax paid this year?

Are there any late payment charges on accounts over the last 6 years? Any PPI?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • I just received in something from year 05/06 saying I owe them £380 from whenI also had a part time job to help make ends meet.
I'm not entitled to any other benefit as I earned up till Sept last year.
One of the debts now down to £300 is all bank charges from that period when I was barely making rent etc but all my debts have frozen interest now.

You need to reclaim the tax for April to September 2008. They may reclaim you old debt but you might still get something. Look at your P45?

Have you reclaimed bank charges and late charges on cards, catalogues and loans? For the last 6 years?

Was there PPI on any account? Claim or Reclaim.

And look at the up your income thread at the top of the board.
