'rusty'chrome

I got a chrome uplighter standard lamp, but the base has got rusty spots on it. I don't want to buy a new one as the rest of the lamp is OK, Have tried loooking for a spot where I can still use the lamp, but not have the base on show but haven't got one. So has anyone got any 'bright' ideas on covering up, cleaning/removing the rust. Thanx
PS Did have something similar with 'rusty' towel rail and painted the whole thing with grey Hammerite which worked a treat, but this time I want to keep the chrome look if poss

Try rubbing the spots with damp aluminium foil - the rust should come off.0
