Yeah its all cooked in microwaves and comes frozen or vacuum packed. The sounds of the chef working the numerous woks in the kitchen are just played from a CD and piped through to the waiting area.

very little was cooked in microwave where I worked. You could see it cooked when at the customer counter. I cant speak for every takeaway though, I am just saying that it isnt the case of microwave food if at all in all takeaways
  • I have often wondered this too. There is a big chinese supermarket call Hoo Hing near to me. I keep meaning to go there and see if I can do my own home made takeway!?! It's on the A13 to London sort of Dagenham/Barking area. Has anyone been there?

You will be able to. There is a curry paste that most of the chinese takeaways use... they just add different things to it. My local chinese takeaway does a lovely chinese curry! Really thick and creamy. Im sure its the paste that most chinese's use, but with things added to it!

Its quite worrying that hardly any Chinese take aways sell proper chunky chinese chips, out of the 6 Chinese Take Aways in town only 1 sell proper Chinese Chips the rest are frozen rubbish, they all used to sell proper Chinese chips a few years ago

Passing our local take away a while back & saw the owner unloading bags & bags of Asda Smart Price frozen chips from his car!:rotfl:

Have to say though that the chinese/asian/oriental food from there is ok & tastes fresh enough.

I used to work in chinese takeaways when I was younger and so did my mum and they all cooked from scratch, not microwaved. The only things bought in frozen were chips, burgers etc. They made everything else themselves, including the sauces I used to watch them all the time.
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

Wing Yip - Curry Sauce Concentrate.

Available from Sainsburys in their 'specialist ingredients' section. Although, only a couple of weeks ago, my local Costcutter store had a batch on sale which have now sold out, not sure if they're going to stock it permanently, as I haven't seen it in there since.

You scoop out the paste into a saucepan, add 3-4 times the amount of water, then bring up to a simmer whilst stirring regularly and it thickens into a lovely curry sauce. Wonderful poured over chips! Any left over sauce we put into the fridge and use the next day and make a chicken and veg stir-fry then pour over the sauce and heat through... the result is a wonderful Chinese chicken and veg curry!
  • I've worked in many restaurants. Price is usually an indicator if it is cheap then it must be prepacked - either on site or brought in. However, expensive is not an indicator - as some will still buy the cheapest pre frozen or boil in a bag stuff.
The other thing to think about if you want to buy from a supplier is do you want 500 prepacked spring rolls and 25kg of frozen fried rice?
