It was Arthur Scargill that screwed the miner's just as he'd been screwing the country for the previous x years. Unfortunately he more than met his tactical match. Thatcher did want rid of Scargill and the militancy he stood for - and he made it very easy for her to achieve.
FWIW coal was and continued to be imported from Poland (and presumably other places) throughout the 80's.
FWIW the new power stations that were ordered were all gas fired, the miners strikes were a result of the proposed closures that were denied by Thatcher and then actioned. The purpose of all this was to break the miners, whether it was good or bad for the future og GB Ltd was irrevelevant. BTW this also included the import of foreign coal.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

My belief is that the UK will see her first 10 year period where house prices fall rather than rise before too long.
To be a complete nerd but some areas according to HBOS figures 1989-1999 have already.0 -
Do we really want our children working in 19th century conditions in ever longer tunnels, hacking out expensive carbon releasing coal?
I think foreign investments like this one, probably signed the death warrant for deep mining in this country.

Should we re-open a pit for redundant bankers; they would still be better off than the millions of people who are going to starve as a result of their policies.0
