Default notices not received

Hi all, my first posting hopefully you can help me!!
I checked my Experian file to find two default notices one from British gas for £100 and one from First Direct for £4426. My question is i never received any default notices from either companies, also British Gas was cleared on 31/12/08 after a debt recovery company contacted me to advise of debt. I had disputed debt with BG about 9 months ago and no further contact was made. Also with First Direct i was 1 month in arrears of an arrangement. No letters or contact had been made. When i phoned to make my monthly payment i was informed that my account had been passed to a company called Metropolitian who i've found out are a HSBC collection department. I paid them and made an arrangement to make payments with them. At no time was i told about any Default notices being issued. I received a letter from Metropolitian saying they are happy to except my payment and if i fail to keep up payments further action could follow.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I am bumping this for you...as I know someone should be able to help. I am sure there are template letters if you didn't actually receive a default notice which you can use to argue with your creditors to remove the default. But hopefully someone can say for sure!DMP Nov 05 =£20,293
DMP Feb 09 = £10,839
Daddy Loan = £1,902
Pay off 10k by Christmas 09 = £2,315/10,0000 -
