Help wording a letter re Debt i don't think i owe?

Hi everyone

This morning I received a letter (notice of intent to commence debt collection action) from Advantis Credit Limited regarding an outstanding balance owed to United Utilities. On this letter it states the ammount owed is for the period ending 13/03/05 for my previous address which i moved out of on 11/08/03. I'm trying to write a letter explaining this and I just can't seem to get it worded right, can anyone help me? or is there a template letter anywhere online regarding this?

I had contacted United Utilities regarding this back in 2006 and they said they would cancel the charges for the period 11/08/03 - 13/03/05. Unfortunately it was so long ago i can't find the letters to or from united utilities.

I would just send the "prove it" letter to them.

Not sure why they would be chasing you though - just chancing it methinks. After 6 years, most debts become statute barred, but for utilities, they are only allowed to go back 2 years for unpaid bills.
After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

    Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
    Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0

    Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/2011

Thank you, I think the prove it letter sounds like a good idea.
Although I didn't know they could only go back 2 years for utilities, does this mean it is statute barred? where can i find out more information on this?
Thank you again, this forum is so useful!

If you moved out in 2003, then you are not liable for this debt in the first place.
If this was your debt, then the last payment you made towards it or acknowledged the debt in writing was over 6 years ago - this would make it statute barred.

This is the time limit explaining how long utilities can backdate bills for.

I would just send the prove it letter and state in it that you did not reside at the address for the period they have stated.
