    I meant IRA not IRS!

    I'm not sure which emoticon denotes Generali beating himself up!

    The thought of troops being sent in to control the people is more of a nightmare to me than anything I could dream up myself. Scary thought, since the troops are also 'the people' in some respects. Also scary in that the government is voted in 'democratically', so how would they have the right to set the army on us? Couldn't we, actually, set the army on them?

    Technically, the government does not have the right to 'set the army on us' as the Queen is CinC of the armed forces and their loyalty is to her, not her government.

    Now, in practice, they take their orders from the PM, but in a potentially revolutionary situation it's possible that a 'Queen's Party' (Mandelson need not apply, despite the name) could be formed that would basically be a military junta with the Queen as figurehead.

    I don't know if constitutionally it is feasible but Churchill proposed something along these lines in 1936 as a threat to prevent Edward VIII being forced to abdicate, though obviously it didn't work.

    So when you said on another thread;

    You really mean that it's better to believe any random wannabe journalist with internet access?

    Yes, but this is a random wannabe journalist who understands the objective reality which America faces. ;)

    Funny that should be brought up, but 30/40 years ago a guy I know who had control over a group of soldiers was asked in a ‘survey’ by his superiors, if he would be prepared to take up arms against the population.
    They narrowed it to people from different counties, Scots, Irish etc, cities, towns, right down to relatives, just so as they knew where he could be sent at times of national emergency, and still fulfill his orders.
    Rivalry and division haven’t’ been created for nothing, It’s the ultimate state control.
    I’ve always remembered the discussion I had with him and hope it never happens.
