Im getting married in may, the problem is that i was self employed afew year ago and the business didnt work out, so ended up with some debt, not huge, but enough to cause many sleepless nights. I also had some personal debt, credit cards, catalogue and now have a bad credit rating
When we get married will my credit rating affect my partners? he has excellent credit and i dont want to affect his?
All bills are in his name, including mortgage, car etc. We dont have anything joint. everything is seperate, although i am on the council tax.
If i was to go bankrupt, which ive thought about alot and to be honest, its the last option. Would going bankrupt after we marry affect him?
Just to add, i am paying all the debt back but at a very slow rate as im paying back what i can afford at this present time.

No - bankruptcy is personal to you. The only effect would be any joint debts would fall to him, but as you don't have any there's no problem there

Best thing would be to call CCCS or CAB and get some proper advice as to what options you have.Get free advice before embarking on bankruptcy: CCCS 0800 138 1111 National Debtline 0808 808 4000

I was told that other people's credit rating would not be affected providing there is no financial link between you and the other person. However, I'm not sure if marriage is considered a financial link. My gut feeling is that it's not. If you don't have any joint accounts, then there is no financial link as such. As soon as you have one account together (mortgage, bank or loan), a financial link will exist.
I'm not 100% sure that this is correct but I'm sure someone on here will know.0 -
Actually, just found the following on the Working Lunch website:
Marriage does not mean that you share the same credit score only a financial link i.e. joint account. I would advise against opening a joint bank account once your husband has been discharged as his bankruptcy will stay on his credit file for 6 years. To protect your credit rating you can request a 'Notice of Disassociation' on your credit file. This tells credits that although you are married and live in the same household you do not have any financial connections.
So it appears that it should not affect his credit rating providing you do not open any joint accounts either now or in the future and for peace of mind, request a notice of disassociation.0
