Incorrect tax code for years - how much am I due?

Hi,

Like many others, I have just received my new tax code. This year I thought I would actually look at it since I'm in money saving mode.
I noticed that I was down for a taxable expense of £2052, which drastically lowered my tax code, there is nothing of this on my P11D.
I phoned the tax office to find out what this was and was told it was from tax year 2003 - 2004. I used to get a fuel card at my old place of work, so assume it's this. (I left there in March 2005) I was also told to write and claim back the overpayment that I have paid every year since!
My question is how much are they due me?
Is it as simple as 4 years x £2052 x 40%?
Cheers,

Stoney.

  • If you were a 40% taxpayer the whole time, then yes for each full tax year since then which is 4. Plus a bit of repayment supplement (like interest but a pretty low rate).
  • I have been 40% taxpayer throughout, so looks like that's my holiday paid for this year:beer:

How long can I expect before getting the dosh?

  • You are hostage to HMRC - but I would say any time between 2 and 5 months depending on how much info they ask you for and how quickly you respond.

Unfortunately HMRC can no longer meet their 15 working day post turnaround target and with thousands of 11CTC's to work through for 2002/2003 it's more likely to take 8 to 10 weeks. However it's a nice refund to look forward to.:D

Why would a backlog of Child Tax Credit forms cause a delay in handling a claim for a refund of income tax? I'm almost certain that there are dedicated staff for each discipline and that an excess of work in one area would not affect the (lack of) progress in the other.
  • The 11CTC forms need to be dealt with before the end of the current tax year and are dealt with by the PAYE/SA teams within HMRC, the same as other claims for income tax refunds.

The 11CTC forms refer to the Childrens Tax credit Allowance in the PAYE tax code in 2002/2003 as opposed to the current system of Tax credits (Working and Child) which are dealt with by the Tax credit Office. Those 11CTC forms have been submitted by people wanting to reclaim a refund of income tax in 2002/2003 because they think they didn't get that allowance in their tax code in that year.

As sweetietot said in their post, all will be dealt with by the PAYE/SA processing teams in the relevant tax offices in order of arrival at the tax office.

    Thanks for this clear explanation.
