Yes I have just come back from Tesco, and needed some fresh yeast for a homebrewing kit I got for christmas. After asking if they stocked it, I was told to ask at the bakery counter, where they bag it up and give it away for free.
How cool is that??!!! Pardon the snow/ cold weather pun....hehehe
Bread making and homebrewing just got even cheaper.......beat that!

Baking yeast is designed to create lots of CO2 to make bread rise and is not really suitable for home brewing other than for " Turbo Cider" as it can impart a nasty taste .
Youngs do a range of brewing yeasts at very little cost which can be obtained from most Wilkinson stores .

you can use baking yeast for JAO mead... yummy, though I do agree that brewing yeast is probably better!Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

My parents used to home brew the most potent Rhubarb, Parsnip and various other wines. I recall the process involved floating fresh bakers' yeast on top of the liquid to be fermented, on a piece of toast!0

Youngs brewing yeast is in fact just bread yeast as well. If you want to use a yeast for brewing I suggest going to a home brew shop. There are a wide range of yeasts developed for specific brewing.shammyjack wrote: »Baking yeast is designed to create lots of CO2 to make bread rise and is not really suitable for home brewing other than for " Turbo Cider" as it can impart a nasty taste .

WRONG !
Youngs do a selection of beer and wine yeasts.
I made an 18% rice and raisin wine last year using Youngs high alcohol yeast, tasted like pale sherry.
Now an 18% alcohol bread would be a novelty !

Not all stores do it  neither Tesco or Asda near us will supply it but Morrisons stock it in their dairy fridge, about 26p for 4 little blocks.0

Eh, Ive used yeast on toast to make wine- works fine. I made some awesome rice and raisen wine - like Saki - once, just using tescos free bakery yeast on the must. It was TRULY the best wine I've ever made, no nasty tastes, just very nice ones''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0
