sick pay - got paid in full

hi everyone

I have been off work all january as the doctor said i may have glandular fever.I was very worn out the first week in january and could not get to the doctors for a sicknote from 2nd till 15th. on the 16th jan i got a sicknote and have had one every week until this monday coming. now i got paid full wages in january even though i didnt have a sicknote for the 2nd till 15th. i think i get the first 5 working days paid then after that its a sicknote. and i have a meeting regarding my sickness as i have been ill a few times in the past 6 months been really unlucky with it. now i know the company is entitled to the money back that i have been overpayed and am very worried as i dont have much of it left (bills) and if i get dismissed will no longer have a job to pay it back. how do i approach this? many thanks

you should have sent in a self certification sick note for your first 5 days of sick. These can be downloaded from the HMRC website, filled in and sent to your employer. Have you checked your contract regarding sick pay. Its worth a look. Some companies pay full pay whilst off sick for a certain length of time. Cant help with anything else i'm afraid but i'm sure someone else will be along shortly.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • yeah i have filled one in an that covers me for first five days off sickness so its really around 8 days (5 working days) as i have sicknotes which cover the rest of it

I think they might have given you the benefit of the doubt about the sicknote from that first week as they have received others for the weeks following. Regarding full pay for first 5 days then 'sicknote', you need to check your terms and conditions. Sick notes are required whether the company gives full pay or they put you on SSP. It doesn't necessarily follow that you are put on SSP after 5 days unless that is their policy.
