Inappropriate behaviour from Cahoot

I applied for a current and savings account with Cahoot recently, received a text message Saturday stating that the application was successful and that my accounts were ready for use. Upon receiving said text message I went about transferring money from my exisiting current account and a savings account - which I have since closed - and began transferring direct debits to the new account.
I received my debit card this morning and immediately tried to activate it. After two failed attempts I rang Cahoot for assistance. I was told that my application had been declined. A couple of e-mails and phone calls later this has been confirmed by a manager.
Is it normal for a bank to behave in this manner? Can they waste peoples time and money in this way? I have incurred expenses in the form of 0870 calls and wasted much time, then there is the £3.4k sitting in limbo.
I'm furious, very frustrated and in shock.
In some regards I am glad this has happened now since I do not wish to deal with a company that operates in this manner.

It is not normal. Normal is making the decision before ordering the card and sending the message. Something has come to light which has changed their decision between them ordering the card and sending the email and you activating it.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. Thank you dunstonh.
I have queried them as to why they reversed their decision and got nowhere. I have no debts, employed full-time in a professional role and always have a positive balance.
I will take it up with their complaints department.

I would advise you order copies of your credit files and see if there is anything on there that may have caused them to change their mind. If there was I would have thought it would have been spotted sooner. This does sound very odd.Thank you dunstonh.

Thank you Clive. I have used Credit Expert's services in the past 12 months to check my credit rating and that placed me in the top - best - credit group. I will speak with them again to see if anything has changed. There have been no credit card or loan applications.
This has really got to me today

My feelings that my money would not be safe in the hands of Cahoot have been confirmed. They have yet to return £200 of the money transferred to them and are proving themselves to be incapable of performing even the simplest of banking transactions - a money transfer - without a huge drama.
Thank you Cahoot for sparing me further agony in the future if/when I needed access to my money in a hurry.
The sheer number of duplicate letters, switcher packs, payment books and other items still being delivered to my home on a near daily basis shows that Cahoot lack any environmental awareness too. Green they are not!0
