i had the whole lamb for £59

That's a great deal - I have just paid £75 here! Do they prepare it in joints for you?

We haven't any room in the freezer for any more meat at the moment!!

    thanks

Yes, we can request how it is cut but below is the standard which I have gone for.

    That is the standard cut:

    2 shoulder joints
    Minced shoulder
    4 leg joints
    3 belly joints
    a kidney
loin as 3 joints or chops

but butchery can be specified, if required.

Off to the library for me:D I want to brine the ham - and was unsure if I could do bacon - I had half remembered about bacon weight pigs being older.

DH will be happy with lots of roast pork

  • We're just waiting for news of the lamb we've got on order - it's due to go to the abbatoir in a week or so, then another week or so and "herbert" as he's been nicknames will be with us. After that we quite fancy trying half a pig.....we have a supplier lined up for that already as the people who run our favourite farmers market are pig farmers, and happier pigs you've never seen!

I'd definitely suggest the RC Meat book - an absolute fund of knowledge.

I once bought one from a friend whose brother raised pigs in Wales and when it arrived all chopped up in bits and frozen I had to give half of it away as I couldn't get it all in my freezer .Even half a pig is a lotta pork to store.Good luck

I've also ordered half a pig (£60) from a guy who's not far from us (he's also on downsizer and river cottage). Should be ready to go to slaughter next week I think. We're going halves with friends of ours.
Fun part is, we're going to collect it from the farm so that I can have a look around and he said there might be piglets to see! I love piglets, so I can't wait!

Well, I've ordered a side of pork. It will be about 35kg (77lb) at £2.99 a kg, so about £105

The butcher is going to cut the leg into 3 joints, the shoulder into 2 -blade and shoulder. He's cutting the belly flap into 2 roasting pieces and the loin into chops (bagged up in 5s). There will also be the hock, 2 trotters and 2 kidneys (he's throwing one in for free).

I think it is fantastic value. A single large leg joint in the butcher's window was priced at £42. Definitely the way to go if you have a large freezer.

    I'm collecting it on Thursday -I'm excited:D
  • Aaargh! I still don't have room in my freezer (dead jealous!)

Years ago we bought a side of pork from a butcher and you could choose which joints you wanted as pork and which as bacon/ham...you could have rashers/sausages as well. Can't for the life of me remember what we paid for it but priced one last year (then had no space in freezer) at something like €3.60kg...one of my freezers is empty so might consider a side of pork and a lamb...would certainly make life a bit easier from price and time point of view.
