Car Firm Ford To Cut 850 UK Jobs

The firm will axe between 400 and 500 staff from a plant in Southampton, with the remainder to go from operations across the UK.
The news comes as the latest industry figures showed new car registrations fell by 30% in January.

  • Sadly I think this may only be the start for the car industry. I think anyone at the moment would be mad to buy a brand new car. I for one will be holding on to mine for at least another year to see what happens and then would only buy a second hand car if things are better.

Our car is nearly 9 years old. I just hope we can get it through at least one more mot without it costing a fortune. When I've (hopefully) qualified and got a job we will update it and will possibly need a 2nd car.

I can;t buy a car for love nor money at the minute.

I've visited Ford dealers and Skoda dealerships these last few weeks and in each and everyone of them I meeting the most miserable and uninterested salesmen I've ever had the mis-fortune to meet.

3 Skoda dealers, not interested in selling me new car!. I mean I said "I want a new car, I want your finance" and each time I've got hmmm's and errr's and then they tap on their screen and knock out a price that is basically MRRP and they say that's the best they can do.

If they can't even be bothered to sell to a motivated buyer, who has the deposit in cash, no part exchange and a good credit records then god bless them.

Perhaps this is why car sales are down, dealers aren't selling any to customers.....
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

What it doesn't say in the above article is that the Transit production is being moved to Turkey in 2011 anyway, these jobs are going to go in the medium term regardless.

I would take a normal loan from bank and order the car from www.nationwide-cars or www.dealdrivers.
I've done some research because I want the Fiesta myself and these came up cheapest.
Dealerships and discounts? It's either my negotiation skills or the salesman, but I cannot get any discount worth mentioning at dealership either...
  • Ford is currently doing finance offers on the new Fiesta at 4.9% apr on options, this is much cheaper than any bank loan i have seen out there.

JasonLVC, i dont know where your based, but if its around the london area i can reconmend a good dealership and salesman that we bought ours from.:j

I visited a carpet retailer recently which was in the news for being in trouble. Asked for a quote etc and the smug mug scratched some figures. He appeared totally uninterested in me and seemed to just wait for me to leave. I didnt even bargain and he did not even try to sell me but just sat there glaring at me. Have people lost the sales techniques because when the times were good they just didnt have to sell ?

Yes, I know they do, but if you cannot get a discount on a car then it is not worth it. I was able to get a loan from Nationwide for 7.9% and £2.5k discount from those website, so it works out cheaper.
Did you get a big discount from your dealership?
