Hi
I was wondering if there was any way to keep fruit fresh once it has been peeled or cut. I want to start adding more to the kids lunch boxes, but they often say they don't get time to eat a full apple or peel tangerines etc...
I put little pots of raisins in at the moment. If I peeled and segmented a tangerine would it keep ok in a little tuppaware pot, and any ideas about apples or bananas??
They don't like tinned or dried fruit (except raisins)

I think apple and banana would go slightly brown if left or any lenght of time.
Try an air tight box.

Apple will keep in water. Pubs use soda water to store citrus fruit slices. If you used soda water for storing apple slices it would give it an added dimension. You can buy 2l bottles in ASDA for about 16p.
You could also just squeeze lemon juice on them.
Not sure about bananas.0 -
lemon juice will def work on apple...i don't think tangerine would spoil.Mum to gorgeous baby boy born Sept 2010:j0

I used to peel tangerines & put them in a tiny tupperware box & they were fine. I also did this with grapes, pineapple, strawberries there was often a little fruit salad going on in there!
Edited to say: Just been reminded by my son that I used to make fruit kebabs on straws. I cut various fruit up and pushed them onto a straw then wrapped up in cling film, they always went down well. HTH0 -
in fruit salad recipes it mentions putting the cut fruit sides in lemon juice which will slow it going brown...im at a loss to think of how to keep a banana nice...perhaps banana chips ?onwards and upwards0

Orange juice or pinapple juice also works, i often make up fruit salads and keep it in tupperware for my lunch at work and they are alittle less harsh in flavor than lemon so they won't spoil the taste of the fruit. Banana also keeps this way for a short time ... it's fine if you make in the morning, as the kids should be eating it at around midday.0

It's not as healthy, but would tinned fruit like pineapple be any good?
Melon keeps ok under cling film or in a lidded pot until lunchtime. So does sliced kiwi.
Does it have to be fruit? Would carrot sticks and bits of cauliflower be acceptable?0
