Is CVV number required?

I may be getting paranoid, but my brother is to make payments to my debit card (to pay back some money i loaned him).

He has asked for the card number (fair enough)
The expiry date (...okay)
And the CVV number (really?)

I though that this authentication number was only required if you were making purchases. Do you need the CVV number of a card you are making payments to?

No idea who he is banking with though so can't check their site or anything.

thanks
George

not normally, no you don't need the CVV if he is paying into an account - however, is it a bank account? Would the account number and sort code be better?

Is the debit card linked to a bank account, as I'm sure that you only need to account number and sort code.

    Personally, I would be suspicious.

I am suspicious; and i hate that.

I already gave him the account number and sort code (LTSB debit card)
He came back and requested the number on the card, then the start/expiry and CVV number.

He owes me money from way back which i've basically written off, even though he earns over double my wage. I recently helped him when he changed jobs and was waiting for money from his expenses but i am mow paranoid about why he would want those details. AAAAaaaargh!!

there's no way your brother can make a payment to your debit card.... he can only make a payment to your bank a/c ..so only needs your sort code and account number.

    Hiya George,

I have paid into family and friend's accounts many times. To make a payment into someone's account, you need the sort code, account number, and name of account holder only.

Certainly not the long number off the front, the CVV or the expiry date.

You would use these latter details to make a purchase, for example to buy from the internet, or to clone someone's card. Not to make a payment. I used to work for a credit card company (for my sins) and we told people NEVER to give out this information to friends or family.

Just a quick thought - could you ask him for cash or a cheque instead, claiming you want the cash into a different account, or not to hit a bank at all?

If he still insists, why not give him the wrong CVV and expiry date numbers? He won't get far that way, and the bank may block your card and ring you to tell you that someone was trying to use your card fraudulently!:D

    xx

    Hmmm

He says he has a Cap1 creditcard
Does he know this would go through as a cash advance and a huge interest rate?

I'll try to have a look at what Cap1 says on their site.

If he wants to pay you from a credit card then he can, but it will be very expensive for him - they'll charge a cash handling fee - and then he'll be paying a more expensive rate of interest on top.

He won't be able to make a direct payment from his credit card into your bank account unless he uses something called a 'credit card cheque' which CC companies occasionally send out to entice people to spend extra. Presuming that he doesn't have these, he would have to draw the cash out of a machine, similar to how he would draw out cash with a debit card.

He could then just hand you the cash (easiest all round by the sound of things!!) or he could go into a branch of whichever bank you use, and pay it in over the counter using your sort code and account no. If he's not sure how to do this, a cashier will help.

Hope that helps clear it up a bit!! xx
