Retraining companies

I am a self employed graphic designer who is currently struggling for work during this economic downturn. I am considering retraining as a tradesman (Joiner, Plumber, Gas Engineer or Electrician). There are companies offering courses which you repay for once you have completed the training.
I am wondering whether I will be left with the costs to repay and not skilled enough to get the work to pay it. Has anyone else had experience this and could advise me whether it is worthwhile?

Ok.
Now is not the time to be going into an industry that is declining. Until the Banks start lending, the construction industry has housing on hold, which means that there is an abundance of construction workers who are scratching around for work to do.
If you do want to get training, find out who has funding for free training through the Sector Skills Councils.
