I have just received a letter from the job centre stating that My £1100 benefit I have received since July is taxable. I have just signed off claiming as I have got a temp part time job. I was a student until June and I earned £300 since April 2008. I will not be earning more then £600.00 this month and then my temp job finishes. Altogether with benefit I will have acquired approximately £2000 (since April 2008). Should I be paying tax on my benefit??? I have 60 days to appeal - someone please help
Many thanks

What the IR will do is to work out all your incomings at the end of April and work out if you owe them any tax. You may even be due some back! Certainly if you have earned/been given only £2000 since April you will NOT owe anything - the first £6k approx is tax free. The good news is that if you DO owe them anything by April (unlikely) they will simply adjust your next year's tax code, so that when you do earn you will hardly notice the repayments going in.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Thanks very much - I was just worried that as they stated I have 60 days to challenge this, that I would not be able to claim it back in April.0
