Help with fitting a new press stud!!!

Options
Hi all,

Hope it's ok to post here with a sewing query?

Bought DD7 some age 8 jeans for Xmas - costing £22 !!! I'm normally a Primark shopper but these were lovely and thought they'd be great for special occasions etc. So, she put them on for the 1st time last week to find that they wouldn't fasten! Zip went up all the way but the press stud was just a fraction off closing. I hadn't tried them on her before cos I'd assumed that they would have been too big if anything as she is in 6-7 clothes at the mo.

She is a skinny minnie at the best of times and I usually have to adjust her 'bottoms' to the tightest fit but these are ridiculously small fitting! They are also quite low rise fitting and so sit on her hips more than her waist. I had bought them in October so couldn't take them back, BUT there is some room to fit another press stud on.

I have found a spare one that fits, but am definitely no sewing queen - DIY is more my thing! The 'male' fastening bit is fine but I just need to re-fit another 'female' piece about 5mm nearer to the end of the material. (IYSWIM?)

It isn't one of those with bits to enable you to sew it on, but just has 2 parts, as if I need to push one bit through and then connect it to the other bit, but I'm unsure if this is correct and if so, do I need a special tool or something to fit it, or do I have to make a small hole and just clip them together??

Thanks for any help - I damn well know not to buy flippin Matthew Williamson clobber again - the sizes are rubbish! Come back Primark, all is forgiven! :D

Gollly tda10! im not too sure but I think you need a special tool for that. Have you got a spare one you could try out on some scrap?
I would just sew a metal bar type and corresponding slide behind the existing top stud and onto the new position of the lower piece It would still lok like astud fastening from the outside..

Thanks Arty - you mean like a hook and eye jobby? I had thought of those too, but wasn't sure if it would hold on denim?

Not so much hook and eye, same idea but stroger. Its a a flat metal hook, not sort of bent wirey like a hooka nd eye hook. The bar is also stronger. They are shiny silver usually. Im sure if you look at some of your own trousers youll find what mean. Easily bought.
PS. if you really cant find one I'm bound to have a few spare and could post to you no bother.(hows that for money saving?!).

Artytarty, I think you are talking about a 'trouser bar'.

Thanks very much to you both, and for the offer Arty - that's very kind! I don't have much in my sewing box apart from the odd bit of cotton and a few buttons, but will have a shufty in the erm, sewing shop (can't think of proper name! :o) first and if I'm still stuck I'll let you know.

Are these things easy to fix on then? :o:)

Yes they usually are. There should be small holes at the end of the bar piece and the baseplate of the hook piece for you.

You can see some pictures of them if you follow the link below.. I suggest you measure the depth of the waistband so you get one the right size.
Just make sure that the bar goes on the place where the stud was and the hook on the portion with the button hole. You may need to sew the button hole up first, or possible even reinforce the spot where the stud came out. I suggest you sew it on with just a few stitches first & get her to try them on to check that it's in the right place. If so, sew it on VERY securely as waistbands can come in for quite a bit of strain (kids especially can be quite tough on clothes as they are always tumbling about.... but you know that ! )

I think I have made that sound much more complicated than it really is, I am sure that once you actually have a trouser bar then it will all seem very obvious.

If you get stuck feel free to PM me, I've got loads of these in my sewing box and would be happy to send you one.

    Ahhh! That pic helps! Thanks!

Although I erm, have to admit to not recalling seeing anything like it! :rotfl:! Told you I was more of a DIYer than a sewing bod! I had a shufty at my (many) pairs of jeans and trousers but they all have zips and buttons.

Well, as they say, you learn something new and all that!!!

I'll pop to shop in the morning and see if they have one, but same to you as to Arty - thanks very much for the offer to send one - I'll let you know :)

You don't want me to post you the jeans instead for you to fix em do you?!!! :D

In principle I wouldn't mind but if you paid to post 'em and my return postage you could probably just go and buy a new pair!

If you have any doubt take the jeans into the haberdashers, if the staff are any use they should be able to help you get the right size, and might even show you what to do. Make sure you ask for the trouser bar AND hook...they usually come together in a pack but some stores sell them unpackaged (seperately) and you need both bits for it to work ! Sorry if thats patronisingly obvious but you will be well miffed if you don't !
