Law on working Long Length Shifts??

Is there any law that says you cant work say a 16hour shift in a day?

    No - there is no general law that says you can't. However it may not be allowed if you work in certain occupations such as HGV driving.

    Workers are entitled a a daily rest break of 11 hours but do not have to take such a break if they don't want to (subject to the comment above about exceptions).

    Think nurses in ICU do around 16 hours, but they work for 3 days and have 2 days off. There is also a change of shifts which either adds or removes a day too.

    There is a European law which has the max no of hours (think it is 48?) you can work per week, but you may opt out. I know of one girl who works 72+ hours a week and has Saturdays off.
    GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • The opt-out is going to disappear soon too and about time!
  • You are entitled to 20minute break whilst working, and 11 clear hours between finishing one shift and starting the next, except where continuity of service demands it, and then your employer can give you whats called compensatory rest to make up for it within 72hours.
