Proving qualifications

I was just reading a thread on here about someone mistakenly saying they had a particular grade when the did not.

It got me thinking, at no point have i ever been asked to prove my qualifications. They are on my CV and may have been discussed at interview but i dont recall ever actually providing them.

Even in the job now where specific grades were required and a specific degree.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

It's very rare that an employer would ask you to provide proof of anything that's on your CV including work experience. But a good interviewer would be able to spot knowledge gaps of anyone trying to beef up their CV with porkies. If it's not spotted at the interview then the lack of knowledge will show when they start the job and they'll be out the door quite quickly.

In my last job, I was responsible for recruitment and we did used to ask for proof of qualifications from the younger employees. We did also catch a few people out! However, with the more experienced people, we tended to look at experience rather than qualifications.

I'm in my 40's and although I've been asked for proof of grades, it is so long ago since I took my 'O' Levels and A Levels and a few house moves, that I can't for the life of me find my certificates. I last saw them about 20 years ago and when I explain that, employers are quite happy.

  • Civil Service jobs tend to ask to see the certificates, or you have to sit an entry Maths and English test.

Same here - never been an issue.
  • yeah the post was from me :)
The reason why they want the proof is that throughout this new career, i will have the opportunity to progress to much more defined role, which requires government certification and other certs. My grades are all on my CV from what i have remembered..except a couple are obviously quoted incorrectly...although they are GCSE passes. Anyways this little oversight is possibly gonna cause a big problem untill its resolved..hopefully swiftly :) This is really the first job in over 15yrs where i have had to prove my qualifications
  • You hardly ever get asked for qualifications. I've never been asked, and it's salt into the wound for me because I have a grade I shouldn't have at A level that bloody haunts me and forms one of the biggests regrets of my life in not legally challenging it. Whenever I declare it and tell the truth, it raises eyebrows even though it wasn't my bloody fault! Then I have to get into some vicky pollard-esque explanation about it. I should easily have had over 300 ucas points and have been able to get into most unis and grad schemes, but now it's not the case. If i could get away with lying, with a fake certificate or something, or had the IT wherewithal to do it myself, I'd be very happy to do so, but as i've never been asked for proof, I guess I'll have to tell the truth, when really the truth is misleading. Grr!
