Dormant pensions

I've got 2 old company pensions that I no longer put money into, and they're worth about £2,000 between them.
As I understand it, I can really only leave them as they are or transfer them into a new pension scheme with a new provider, I can't access the cash until my retirement age. Is this right?
(I wish I could access the cash as I could pay off my credit card with it

I'm going to try and get to speak to an IFA soon about it and see what advice I can get about reorganising my pensions as my appropriate personal pension is with the Cooperative Insurance Society, and I understand that their funds haven't been doing that well over the last few years.
