Indian Restaurant?

We're looking for a good Indian restaurant as close as possible to East Belfast for tonight. We'll be driving but don't want to go too far in case the weather turns nasty! I've heard that Indian food is generally safe for those with a gluten intolerance and we'd like to take my Dad out.

Someone suggested the Bokhara in Holywood. Anyone got any thoughts or recommendations?

I can recommend Cinnamon on the Comber Road in Dundonald, they have an early bird menu and did have 25% off last time I was there. Staff are very attentive without being overbearing and had have been back a few times.
I was last there a couple of weeks ago on a miserable weds night in mid Jan and it was busy, IMO always a marker of a good restaurant.

    Hope this helps.

jenny-wren, Indian food is usually gluten free if you do not have nan or other form of bread, as you probably know beers are not gluten free, but wine is.. it is still safer to make that clear to waiter before you order as not all Indian food is gluten free.

I would recommend Ginger Root on Great Victoria Street, food is very authentic.

Another vote for Cinnamon on Comber Road.

A new Indian has just opened in Ballyhackamore called Jasmine. It's BYO which is a huge bonus. Haven't had the chance to try it yet but plan to very soon. It's beside the Winemark, just across the road from The Point.

  • I'll second the Ginger Root, but it's probably further away from home than you wanted.

We did the buffet at Gingerroot once.I don't wanna sound like Alan Partridge, but the plates were tiny and there was a one visit policy, and some other silly rules, and you were watched by staff. Bog standard Indian food too. But that was ages ago.
I'd recommend the Raj in Mill St, Comber (same people as Bakora), or Lolita or Indie Spice on the Stranmillis Road, or the Jharna (opposite Ryan's Bar) on the Lisburn Rd. Or one I haven't tried is the Spice Club in the Ramada restaurant at Shaw's Bridge.
    Now I'm hungry...
  • I forgot to let you know how we got on ...

We opted for the Indian Ocean at the Odyssey. I phoned and was told that they had several gluten free dishes, the waiter even helped my Dad choose safe options from the menu.

We had a really good meal but unfortunately the gluten free cuisine wasn't so gluten free. My poor Dad suffered for a day afterwards. :(

We tried Hill Street Brasserie last Wednesday night and had a really fantastic meal. We asked our waitress about gluten free options and she was happy to discuss our query with the chefs. They said it wouldn't be a problem at all to adjust many of the dishes for my Dad even offering to able to make the salted chilli squid starter without the batter. Guess where we'll be going next time he's staying with us!

  • The Jasmine is good for takeaway but the Bokhara in Holywood IMO can't be beaten - Indian food to make you weep as to how good it is and good service

Just updating on this...had a takeaway from the Jasmine last night for the first time and it was good. The dips that came with the poppadums were particularly good and the food wasn't heavily artificially coloured like it is from most. Staff were friendly too. I'll definitely use it again.
