New job, car required

Hi everyone, after going BR a couple of weeks back, my OH is in line for a new job, which would be quite well paid and in this climate its not something he can afford not to get.

However he is concerned about the tax code that he will present to his new employer, as I think it will show that no tax is to be paid, is that correct? He is very paranoid about his prospects of getting the job if they find out he is BR.

Also, he will need a new car and it looks like he will be expected to pay for this out of his salary monthly, the problem is it needs to be a fairly decent car as he will be going out to see clients all the time up and down the country. We have a car on HP that we believe will be taken very soon (his OR is going to write to the finance company and explain), so how is he supposed to get a decent car, as we are no longer allowed to get credit, has anyone else had this problem and do you have any advice?

Thanks... if its not one thing to worry about its another!!

    Hi Lucky Red Robin,
When your OH changed job his tax code goes back to normal. He may have to be on basic rate for a month or so before HMRC issues the new code to his employer.

You are allowed to get credit, if it's over £500 you have to tell them you're BR. Getting it is a different matter. Is there a family member who could get finance for you?

  • Hi peachyprice, thanks for the information. As my OH knows the guy who may get him this job, he is very wary of the new employer finding out about the BR (we are both BR) as he isn't proud of the fact at all. I know they could do checks etc. anyway if they really wanted to but he is still worried that it could scupper his chances if they were to know.

I guess we could ask my brother to do the finance for a car, I had thought of that but wasn't sure if we were allowed to do it what with all the restrictions that they put in place with credit.

We were so happy when the BR was approved at court, the OR has been great so far, but now another worry. Is he too much of a worrier?!
