CRB check to work in a hospital?

I have an interview on Wednesday to work in my local hospital as an X-ray support assistant.
I was wondering if I was offered the job would I need a CRB check? I think I would but not sure.
If I am right that I need the check and was offered the job I assume I couldn't start until the check had been done?
How long do they take? I have never had one before but never been in trouble with Police so I'm not worried about it.

I'm just trying to think positive that I will get the job but also thinking about how long until I can actually start work if I need the CRB check.

Thanks for any and all help/advice.

You will be required to undertake a CRB check, the length of time they take depends on the detail they want and you may be expected to pay for the check/partially pay for the check
  • I've never been asked to pay by the NHS, I have had about 7 with the NHS. They are being really slow at the moment I have been waiting nearly two months for mine.

At your interview ask what happens about your CRB check - when I was waiting for one i was allowed to work but wasn't allowed to be in a room with a patient unsupervised.

Mine arrived this morning so just under two months but I assume it took a bit longer than normal because of Christmas and New Year.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I read the info pack again today when getting my documents together that they want and if I had read it properly the first time  I would have noticed it says about having a CRB check done if working with children and vulnerable adults. I assume working in Xray its likely I will come into contact with these 2 groups at sometime so will need one.

Nice to know I might be able to start whilst the check is in progress if I am supervised.

    thanks again

  • Working with children and vulnerable adults usually applies if your working in an area where they are and you are unescorted. Saying that building contractors often have to work in children's hospitals and understandably there are procedures in place to cover people that haven't had a CRB check done, usually the need to be escorted or have someone notified of their presence and made responsible for them.

It can take about 6 weeks, but in your 'new' job you could x-ray vulnerable people and children, no self respecting employer will allow you to work with them until you have been checked, and if they do then they are looking for trouble if you 'were' a danger.

Most companies (in fact all the ones i have worked for) pay for the CRB check be in the normal one or the enhanced one.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

I work in a hospital. I do not work with patients, only work with computers behind locked door and I've had a CRB check. Even our contractors had to have a CRB check. Basically everyone that works there has been checked - just in case.

Depending what comes back, say if caught joy-riding when you were 15 and now you are 20, they will probably still take you on.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

Just wanted to thank you all again for the advice.

I had my interview a little while ago and it was said that if I got offered the job it would be dependant on an Occupational health check and a CRB check.

Will have to wait and see now :D
