Removing mould from wood

Options
Hi there I am not sure if this is in the right place so please move if not.

My friend has given me a really expensive pine dining table and it has been stored in a garage for over a year. The problem is that on some of the chairs and on the table itself there are black splodges of mould that have got uder the varnish so impossible to clean off with a sponge. One of the chairs has also split on the seat. I really love the table and want to salvage it as best I can. For now it will be ok with a table runner and seat cushions but I really want to get it back to how it should be.

What are the best and cheapest ways to fix this. If anyone has any suggestions or have even done this before with success I would be really grateful. Many thanks

Sand it down to remove the varnish and the damaged wood, then either treat it with oil or re-varnish it. I'd recommend the former, as then if it gets marked it is easy enough to sand it lightly and oil it. Once it is varnished, you have to take ALL the varnish off in order to clean it up!

As for the split in the seat - I have pawnbroker chairs and nearly all the seats have split. I just put cushions on them!

You can use wood glue dribbled in between the two halves and then use a strip of old fabric tied around the two pieces to hold them together tightly until the glue takes.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

I'm having trouble with a leg of a bed, split, so am reading the 'split' repair advice with interest....

Valli the bed leg will probably need some wood glue, but maybe as well as that, brace it with a metal bracket. They're cheap enough from B&Q or somewhere like.
