Cancelling my gym membership

Hi all, looking for some advice from a more knowledgable person!

I have been trying to cancel my gym membership since the middle of Novemeber, I called them and they said I had to put it in writing (you have to give 1 months notice). So I did, didnt hear anything back so I assumed that all was well. However the gym took payment from my account in Jan. I called them and was told that my membership was still active and the manager was looking into my membership and would call me back! That was over a week ago and I still havent heard anything back! I cancelled my direct debit online on Friday but apparently it takes 3 working days take effect. The payment is due to come out on the first of the month, obviously it will come out tomorrow which i expect since i havent heard anything back from them.

Does anyone know what I can do? Or what my rights are? I am really annoyed about the situation!

Hope my ramblings make sense!

Just wanted to say be careful about cancelling the direct debit. I was in a very similar situation last year, sent letter to gym etc then cancelled the direct debit. About 6 months later I found out that they had given me a default!!! I only found out when I was checking my credit report.
You need to try to get something in writing from them asap even if it means ringing them every day.
    Good luck

Thanks Becky! I have cancelled the DD hope it doesnt go down as a default! Was going to write them a grumpy letter as im no good on the phone!

Any good jargon on rights etc that I could throw in?? They have taken 2 months when I gave them over a months notice for cancelling my Direct Debit!!!
  • Do you have a copy of the contract that you initially signed? Does it state that you need to give one months notice? If so quote in your next letter that you have given them the correct written notice already and are waiting for confirmation from them that they have received and acknowledged the termination of your membership.
Send the letter by recorded delivery so that they have to sign for it, also keep a copy of the letter for your own records.
Good luck and don't let them get away with it!
