Even for people moving up the market (hopefully us) finding the 3% is gonna be tough - especially as I think I already give enough of my salary to the government (petrol tax, VAT, income tax, National insurance, Road tax and probably more).

Where does the Stamp Duty go ? Or perhaps I shouldn't ask otherwise more depression will hit me!

My 'masterplan' was a permanent removal of Stamp Duty to be replaced with a phased introduction of index linked CGT on principal dwelling. This is fair in my book as the amount of land is limited so real gains above inflation should be taxed. Phased introduction should make people move now rather than later, economic advantage being that it would make the property market quickly move to its fundemental level and if the market was no longer falling banks would be able to quantify their loses and make new loans.
    I think....
  • Is it temporary or permanent?

    Is anything permanent.

The Grays Permanent Building Society was not.
