Working for nothing and mortgage protection.

Options
Hi to you all.
Not sure this is in the correct forum bet here goes...
I was made redundant last year and have been on JSA since September.
In other words my job seeking claim is active. This is important as without this ACTIVE claim my mortgage protection insurance will not be valid.
My problem is that i have a job offer with an immediate start date for job training. However there will be no salary until training is complete which is expected to be the 1st April '09! Therefore i have technichally started work but with no salary for 2 months!
My questions' are: Will my job seekers claim be cancelled because i am now "employed"? And if so my mortgage protection with it?...or Should i tell the DWP the start date is not until 1st April, thereby continuing as an active job seeker until then.
The JSA i can take it or leave it, its my mortgage protection i'm bothered about.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

You need to read the terms of your mortgage protection policy - they usually don't kick in until you've had a month off so there may be some allowance at the other end IYSWIM - to cover you until you ARE paid.
Might be worth calling them and getting your unpaid status clarified with them and your new employer - if they can see a clear end to your claim (ie 1 April) they should be able to cover you until then - otherwise you would have to not accept the job offer and you could be unemployed for months and they will have to cover your mortgage indefinitely.
Bit odd that your new employers expect you to train unpaid though...

  • Many thanks for the replies guys.
After speaking to the mortgage people today they are more than happy to continue to pay the benefit for upto 3 months to allow for training or if you are setting up as self-employed....a big thumbs up for the Nationwide:D
My private income protection is not so helpful. They will only pay while my job seekers claim is active.
At least the house is safe!!

Valli, it is strange for an employer not to pay you while you train.....but i work in a unique industry which desn't seem to conform to the norms of others!!!

    Thanks again.
