I keep getting messages saying Tax office think i'm out of work!!!

This has happened 2 times to me now: I get a letter from the tax people to say they think I'm out of work/changed employer and therefore my tax code has changed. Also the tax offices that are sending these are not the tax office I should be with- nor is it a previous tax office that I have been under for ANY of my employments!! Another occasion, a tax office acutally had me listed at a totally different employer- one i have never worked for or heard of!

the last time this happened (before this weekend's letter that is) I called the tax offices and queried what on earth was going on- no satisfactory answer was given really other than that sometimes they make mistakes and that there was nothing to worry about, and they had made a note on my account- I had to call the tax offices (the one that sent the letter, and the one I should be with) to get my details straightened out.

Now that i have rec'd my third letter along these lines, I'm wondering what information relating to my tax and NI details they have received in order for them to think I'm between jobs??? I did ask this when I had the last lot pof issues and the dopey agent on the phone line said they don't store that info on the screens they can access, so i never knew what had been sent...

1. Should I be worried about this continuing problem? Is someone using my ID??
2. Does anyone else have this happen?
3. and most importantly, is this constant issue over my employment status affecting the tax I'm paying (I have a K code due to 'tax owed from previous years', despite the fact I've always been PAYE through my employers...) ???

hops some one can help as the only other people I can ask are the tax people- given my past experience, I don't really trust what they say!

If you are getting lots of random communications from tax offices with which you have had no connection, I might be inclined to think someone is using your ID. The many changes of tax office indicate to me someone who is drifting from job to job and might well be desperate for a UK ID in order to work. These constant changes cannot affect your tax as only your employer can operate your tax code - not an employer for whom you dont work.
I suggest you write to your real tax office and send them copies of all these other communications you have had and tell them you have been with your employer since xxx and are not unemployed. ell them you think someone else is using your name and NI No and ask them to contact the other tax offices to stop this happening.

I think you need to check your tax code as well. A K code is really bad news.

The only way to sort this is to speak to the tax office or write to them, a telephone call will solve it. When you ring make sure that you have the PAYE Ref of your current employer ans date you started with them.

The tax office are the only people that can help with this.
