  • Im in a similar situation, I got my plate 5 years ago from dvla site for £250, I would like to keep it. When I sought advice I was told not to mention it, as it wasnt over £500. It will cost £80 i think to put on retention?
My car is valued at £1900ish I have my interview by phone on tuesday although Im not sure what it will be about as the case has been passed on to a Trustee, Good luck and let me know how things go tomorrow.

I would imagine they will want to take the car - if you can prove you need it rather than just want it, they may give you some money back to buy another.

Not sure about the number plate, sorry.

  • sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news however
the or will have the registration number of the car from the forms and will see it is a cherished one, he will have the option on it valuations are not difficult to obtain either
however if it were on retention at time of br then it would not be mentioned as not an asset over £1000

It's a bit suck it and see with number plates. There have been a fair few here who have them, me included, the majority have had no problem at all, one person had theirs taken, but had a particularly awkward OR.

Problem with these number plates, especially when initials, is that they aren't worth a great deal - and usually the paperwork/costs involved make it not really worthwhile. Depends on how each OR's office deals with these though.
  • Thanks everybody, she uses the car for work and does a fair bit of travelling for work so fingers crossed.
  • If the OR does pick up on my plate and wants it, bearing in mind it will cost £80 to get it taken off my car, do you think he may sell it to me? I did a valuation and it still came in at £250, it was a present to me (someone else paid for it) and has more sentimental value as the person who bought it me is now dead. :(

A number plate made up on initials is only valuable to someone with the same initials so I wouldn't worry too much about it. No need to mention it specifically (especially considering the cost you paid for it). Like JCS1 says, once you factor in the costs of transfer, it's hardly worth it. A number plate dealer isn't going to pay what you paid for it anyway.

If you're worried about it, call a number plate dealer and see how much they'll offer you for it. It won't be much and if the OR asks you about it, you can tell them you found out what it was worth. Don't volunteer the information to the OR though. Never volunteer any information to the OR! ;)
  • Good advice dvs, thanks, i had my intervies on Friday and found myself waffling a bit. My oh interview is Monday so i have told her to keep it short..

Good advice - no waffling, everything is on a need to know basis and in the words of Richard_S " always tell the truth but don't always be telling the truth" or something along those lines.
