I have two tax codes I think I'm paying too much. Can anybody help????

Hello, I've got two jobs. One I work 19 hours the other I work 9 hours. My tax code for 2009/10 for my main job is 653L. The tax code for my other job is OT and nat ins code A. I will nearly earn the threshold of 6453 on my main job and only earn approx £3000 on my other job it seems that I wont be paying much if any on my main job but get clobered on my second job. Please can anybody tell me if this is correct I have phoned the tax office but they weren't very helpful. Many thanks

    Hi polly punto:hello:

I'll move this to the tax board. You should get good advice there:)

I would THINK that you are right - you won't pay tax on your main job but you will on the second. You have a little unused tax allowance that should be shunted over. You can always reclaim tax though. I would be more worried about your NI number - that should always be the same - it's not job connected. Tell both your employers your correct NI number.

Hi, if you contact the Tax Office to explain, they can arrange to split your tax code, so that you receive a split over each job. That way you will not have to wait until the end of the tax year to reclaim any overpaymnet. If you get no joy the first time you call, call back and speak to someone else, or pop into your local tax office.

NI numbers should be the same.

According to your tax code you will be able to earn £6535 tax -free. This is slightly higher than the normal personal allowance for 09/10 which is £6475. Are you getting an extra allowance for something?

If your main job is using up most of that allowance then yes you will be paying 20% tax on the £3000. That is normal. You will be due a small rebate but not much.

NI code A is the normal for most employees.
