    If you tell them.

Do you see a disability employment advisor at your local jobcentre? If so speak to them also ask them to refer you either to The Shaw Trust or to Remploy - both these organisations help disabled people get back into work. You won't be judged because you have a mental health problem or other disability when you use these avenues to find work.
  • I guess what you are saying here is whether you ought to disclose that you have been out of work due to mental health problems?

Iam in the same situation as 'yourself' where I too suffer from mental health problems and have done for most of my life. I've been out of work only 6 months but my CV has more holes in it for sickness than your average slice of cheese!

I have been looking for work as part of the Pathways to work scheme and to be honest I've just put my 'disabilities' down regardless now. It is part of me and not the whole person, so hope that the person lookin at my application will see past it. However, we all know that in the real world discrimination is rife out there regardless of the Disability Act.

Do you tell the truth or do you hide it? If you feel that putting it down makes you feel better then do that. If you also feel that it will hamper your jobsearch by disclosing your work gaps, then you may have to be a bit 'creative' and explain your situation another way.
  • what i mean is,if i tell them i have been unemployed/say 12months (which is a lie)would they find out that it was a lot longer,(i know truth is best)but am talking a long time.

If feel generally most items like this that have no current bearing and may be seen as a hindrance or problem should be eliminated on the CV and from interviews.

There are exceptions were certain jobs like drug addict adviser will only employ reformed addicts, but feel these types of jobs are not common. Look at Nigel Mandelson, or Jeffery Archer, non of them put forward their past issues when confronting future positions./votes
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

So what do you say you did prior to the twelve months of unemployment you are suggesting could be admitted to?

Have you been able to do an voluntary work or courses? Is it out the way for you now or will you always be battling with it? If so, as it is long term but you are now well enough to work by checking the yes box next to the "do you consider yourself disabled" yuo will be covered by legislation and they have to give you an interview if you meet the minimum criteria. It is nice thouhg when you just have to send in a CV and you can just say have time off taking a sabatical!!! It is tricky. I suffer from mental health probs too- and mostly ish up until the last year my CV looked ok. Next job it will be like do I 'fess up. Part of me thinks "yeah-why should there be shame/ embarassement/ stigma as this is narrow minded and uneducated. it has to change. By not admitting it you are helping to perpetuate these attitudes. Then if they look at your application and go " Ooooh they are a mentalist- don't want them here" then you shoot your self in the foot. Guess it will have to be a case by case basis!

Good luck with your getting a job.
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!
