How do you see that working, not a problem for my MP as she commutes in (from Watford) & so doesn't get a housing allowance but what about the MPs for, say, Lands End & John-O-Groats? Are they supposed to pay to live in London while Parliament is sitting out of their own pocket?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I'm happy to give a rental allowance [or for the state to provide free rented accommodation of a suitable size] to those who live further away.

I'm not prepared to cover mortgage payments, decorating costs or John Lewis lists.

Even if that's the same cost/cheaper than a furnished rental?

Actually, yes.

It's important that our elected representatives should be beyond reproach on the issue of profiting from taxpayers' funds.

On the rental story.

I'm in the forces and have to commute 360miles every week to see my family. If I move closer to my present base then in September I could easily get posted back to Plymouth. On top of that I even have to pay a fortune to travel the distance myself as they only pay a very small contribution to the petrol.

I believe this post is starting to hot up. This is more the way I wanted it. I really thought I had the right idea but there are an awfull lot of people that think it's ok for the gouvernment to mess around with our lives and take no blame for it.

I wouldn't like to see it restricted at all. Goodbye democracy, hello ruling elite. It'd be goodbye to the vote for non-property owners as the next backward step.
