My Humax freesat HDR can do freesat and non freesat mode, not that non freesat mode is much good
Doesn't the non freesat mode give you more channels - ie the channels that aren't on the freesat EPG?

The kit I mentioned looks to be on sale at Screwfix for £40.12, albeit with a different badge, ie labgear.

    Here's a link to it:

I just think it's incredibly cheap for what you get. I've been messing about with it to get it right. Oddly I note that if I delete a satellite, then download it again, I don't always get Channel 4!. I deleted the satellite only because I noticed some of the regional channels were missing. When I refreshed it and downloaded the satellite again the channels seemed to appear.

It's irrelevant if B&Q had it months ago. I didn't see it "months ago", I saw it recently, and therefore to me, it's a bargain. Other people who didn't see it "months ago", may think it's a bargain. Though I fully understand that you don't think so. That's fine and you won't be forced to buy one.

When does a bargain stop being a bargain?
  • I have recently bought the B&Q Philex FTA Sat kit and would recommend it to all newbies. Yes it is basic, and yes it does not have the EPG guide that some more expensive FreeSat receivers have, but its a bargain at £40.

I am not currently using the dish however as there was a Sky Mini Dish installed when I moved into the house. I did not want to commit to Sky and was wondering about FTA satelite previously when I noticed this package at B&Q and Philex are generally well known, so I went for it.

Installation was basically, plug it, connect to Dish and Tune... Bingo some 800+ channels.

The parental controls and menu options take a bit of getting used to and is a necessity if your putting this where kids will use it as there is a whole range of unsuitable material available. I played safe and deleted all the pay and not required channels and then locked the menus.

Like Steve_xx I think this is a bargain and will eventually get a PVR so that I can record the channels. I would welcome any recommendations on Sat receivers with PVR capability (for the lounge) and I can move this one to the bedroom (eventually)

It does have an epg guide, limited as it is, ie you can see what's on now and next, but not what's going to be on over the next seven days.

At the moment I think one of ther best value satellite receivers is the Fortec Passion+, which can be had from Ebay for around the £100 mark and will record onto an external USB drive (not to be confused with the almost identical Passion, which won't). It will also decode the HD channels.

The latest firmare on the Fortecstar website enables decoding of the Freesat 7 day EPG, so you can use the EPG to select programmes for recording days in advance.

Bear in mind this receiver only has one tuner and is designed to be used with a single output universal LNB, so you can't watch one channel and record another, like you can with Sky+. Twin tuner satellite pvrs seem to start from £250 for standard definition boxes up to £500+ for HD capable ones.

    :)
