2007-2008 Payment on Account Made, Can't See That Mentioned in Online Form

in Cutting tax
I'm sure this all used to be easier!
I used to just tot up what I earnt, what I spent, come up with the difference and pay tax on it. Now it's got harder... and online.
The question:
Because of earnings in 2006-2007 I unexpectedly was asked to make a payment on account towards 2007-2008. I didn't know why etc, so I just paid what they asked for. About £1200 or so.
I've nearly done my tax return for 2007-2008 and they don't seem to be saying anywhere that I've already paid some. They seem to be asking me for more tax, when I think they should be paying me some back as I overpaid.
How can I find out what I paid for pre-payment and check that they have taken this into consideration in my final calculation?
Q2:
Why do they make it so bloomin' hard?

Always been that way. The POAs you have made won't reflect on the online system (which is offline to the accounting system) until after the accounting data is dragged back overnight in Batch. I think is does tell you that on the initial calculation?
As you don't now have time to wait overnight - you just have to research what you've paid and ensure there's no balance due + any POA1 for 08-09?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

So I'll leave it at that and be in credit with them.
In 2006-2007 I was self-employed earning 2.5x what I am on now, so it was quite a large over-estimation they made. And I prefer to keep ahead than get behind, so just paid up.0 -
Fine.
The online system is deliberately separated from the accounting system in order the sort of excesses in the run up to 31st Jan don't have an adverse effect on the 'internal' accounting system.
Completed Returns are then dropped into the accounting system overnight and accounting data dragged backwards .... in order you can see the full picture.
Can't guarantee they will run the SA Batch tonight ... but your overall picture should be showing in your online view during Monday. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
This is the first time I've seen/used the online system. I expected it to be a bit more straightforward. So more last minute hitches and queries than I expected0
