Am I entitled to a tax-rebate?

in Cutting tax
In February 2008, I began working on a temporary contract. I was being paid weekly at £9.00/hour on the tax code BR W1 for the first two weeks and then it changed to 522L W1 (emergency tax). I had given them my P45 from my last employment. My tax code then changed in April 2008 to 543L (as I understand to be an emergency tax code still). In June 2008 I was given a permanent position there, my tax code still 543L but I was being paid monthly. I left the job in September 2008 to begin university.
My total money earned while I was working there was £7,604.25 (after tax) and I had paid £1,043.28 in tax.
Will I get some, if any, of this back in April 2009?
It appears that I was being emergency taxed for the whole 6/7 months I was working there. I looked on the Inland Revenue website but that was as about as helpful as a chocolate teapot, so I was advised to enquire on here...
Can anyone help me please?

A little unclear
In tax year 2007-8 i.e. from 6th April 2007 to April 5th 2008 ... how much did you earn and how much were you taxed?
(it looks as if you overpaid tax )
In tax year 2008-9 ..again how much did you earn and how much tax?
543L (without WK1 or M1) would have been the correct tax code as at April 2008,
but here as you went back to Uni and presumably haven't worked since then you will have been overtaxed.
They will not in general automatically refund anything so you will need to contact them and ask for both tax years to be reviewed and the tax refunded.0 -
From August 2007 - February 2008 (tax year April 2007 - April 2008), i worked part time in a shop and earned £3662.10 but paid £0 tax as I was part time.
I then moved in February 2008 to the new company and between February 2008 - April 2008 I earned after tax £1398.47 and I paid £289.03 in tax.
All that added together is £5060.57 earned and £289.03 taxed.
In tax year April 2008 - April 2009 I earned £6205.78 (after tax) and paid £754.2 in tax.
How do I contact them and who do I contact as this is the first time I've had to do this so I'm a bit of a novice!0 -
And you've got a naff calendar .... we haven't got to Apr 09 yet?
For 07-08 you should have a P60? Showing the total income / tax paid at 5.4.08. Send that (keep a copy) to the HMRC office mentioned on the form and request a refund.
For this year - if it is this year? - your Code number should be around 603L? If it is - you look to be paying the right amount. But you need to post the Gross amount / Month number / Code number from your last payslip if you want it checking. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Lol thanks for that!
I meant I finished work in Sep 2008 and have been at uni ever since, would that make a difference?
Thanks by the way!0 -
1. for 2007-8
You are due all the tax back for tax year 2007-8 as you earned less than 5225
2. 2008-9
Assuming you earn nothing more for this year will be get a refund of most of this year as you can earn 6035 before any tax (so tax should be only 6205-6035 = 200 x 20% i.e. £40 rather than £754 )
You need to write to the HMRC giving the figures for each year separately and explaining that you are now a full time student and will not be earning any more money this tax year.
(Unusually Mikeyorks hasn't read your post properly and missed the fact that you are now a student).0 -

Absolutely. Your Personal Allowance (assuming no paid work since Sept - and none likely to 5.4.09 ??) of £6035 is wholly available to off-set the earnings of £6205.78. So that would leave £170 chargeable to tax @ 20% = £34.
So there's a potential refund (any savings interest would reduce it ... unless you've had 20% deducted at source?) there of £754 - £34 = £720. Not bad .. if all your figures OK !
You should have a P45 from Sept? Send that (the P60 from my earlier note re
07-08 should quote the same HMRC office? If not send them both to the one referenced on the P45) to the HMRC office referenced (keep the part marked for employee) + the P60 and a covering note. Which should be a claim for 07-08 (£289) and a statement that you have not been employed / nor will be in the remainder of 08-09, since Sept. And requesting they calculate and refund the tax overpaid. (Which should be circa £720)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Guilty .... as charged
Too thrown by the figures to Apr 09 ....... is my sole excuse.
And - sorry - your response wasn't there when I started penning mine. So - slow as well !!If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I have to say thank you to you both, you've both been a great help! Should I need any more advice I certainly know where to come!0
