have received letter from ccscollect... on the phone they said a settlement figure of £770 to clear it . in the letter the fee they want is the same(£770) but it states a partial settlement. i presume that means they will come back for more. can they change their mind between call and letter. if they want the full £1300 can i go direct to nationwide and bypass their fees, or now its handed to agency is it too late.. sorry for so many Q's but i'm a bit stuck...thanks

Had the same thing happen recently. Advice i got and took was that the creditors are reluctant to say Full settlement as it indicates the account was dealt with satisfactorily i.e paid off in full they will not mark your credit file in this way so they mark it "Partially Settled" but show the balance due as £0.
Basically it's the trade off for settling the account at £770. However you must get it in writing that the £770 will close the account and that they nor any third party will pursue the debt.
Still the account will be defaulted anyway so the Partial settlement record on the credit file should not really be of any consequence to you.
I say go for it but make sure you have it in writing as stated account closed no third party etc etc
