Is there a chance that if I challenge FP that the other company could change their mind on their payout?

I wouldn't have thought so.
I guess the definition with FP was more vague than the other company.
The other company would not have paid out if they could have avoided it, so I think you are safe there.
They underwrote and paid out totally independently from FP, so they can't really change their mind retrospectively.
Different companies underwrite in different ways.
Most people look at critical illness cover on price, but you often only really find out how good the company is when you make a claim.I am a Mortgage adviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Always challenge, there have been decisions over turned in the past.
Your best bet might be to take it up with FPs chief compliance officer (send a letter special delivery) and claim you feel they have not discharged thier duty under 'TREATING CUSTOMERS FAIRLY' in a manner you believe you are entitled to and that you want a detailed written answer as to why claim rejected and how the decline ties in with the exact wording on the policy document.
Worth a go, but dont hold your breath0 -
There isnt a chance the other company will change its mind.
FP do have a pdf on their website that shows exactly when they pay out and when they do not. You could dig around for that. This is important as critical illness cover is not standardised across the board. So, despite the comments on this site telling you to go with price, you should not do so with CI cover. You need to measure quality and price. Last year the ABI did come out with a minimum criteria but since then companies have added different things. A few years before that the criteria was reduced. The criteria is set when you take it out. Not what future changes may be made.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
