in Cutting tax
Hi, I submitted a paper return last october but havent heard, I phoned to chase it but was told although it should have been actioned by now, they had a delay, they owe me a refund as I have been and am still paying emergency tax. How can I speed them up. They say my return is sat in a pile in edinburgh and cannot be chased. I am overdrawn and need it urgently. Thanks for your help

They charge interest, why dont you try sending them an invoice for the money owing plus interest0

If you really are in a financial crisis, phone them up and tell them you are suffering 'hardship'. They will then get processing to pull the tax return from the pile & deal with it. This procedure was adopted by all offices once they realised there was going to be a large delay. If the person you speak to on the phone refuses, ask politely to speak to their manager and they will arrange it for you.
As for interest, the due and payable date for income tax from 2007-08 was 31 January 2009 and HMRC will pay interest on anything paid later than that, as they would charge you if you had paid them late.0 -
As per HMRC website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/interest-repayments.htm no interest will be added to your refund. Sorry0
